ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the scientificity and feasibility of using weighted rank-sum ratio (RSR) method based on diagnosis-related groups ( DRGs) indicators in nursing performance evaluation. Methods Homepage data of medical records were extracted from inpatients discharged in 2017, and " CN-DRGs" burster was used to obtain the DRGs data. Data of medical safety were obtained from the nursing adverse event management system, while data of nursing grading information and medical expenses were obtained from the hospital information system, and the patient satisfaction was obtained in a questionnaire survey. Based on the indicators available, the weighted RSR was applied to evaluate the nursing performance from the 11 dimensions, namely workload, nursing competence, nursing quality, nursing personnel allocation, patient satisfaction, etc. Results The results of the weighted RSR showed that 43, 39, and 6 wards of total 88 wards of the hospital were rated as excellent, medium and poor grades respectively. The results of ANOVA showed that the difference of the 3 grades was significant (F=170. 391, P<0.001). The nursing performance evaluation results were consistent with the actual situation. Conclusions The evaluation of nursing performance with weighted RSR method based on DRGs indicators prove its practical application value, as this method can not only provide data support for nursing personnel allocation, but also provide reference for nursing quality evaluation and supervision.

ABSTRACT

Objective To establish a post management performance appraisal method for orthopedic nurses, and explore its practical effects. Methods The balanced scorecard performance tool was used in combination with two rounds of expert consultation to establish the appraisal index system. It comprises assessment indexes of four dimensions, dimension weight and index score value. Monthly performance appraisal value was calculated based on the nurses′post coefficient, and the health factor was used to reduce nurses′dissatisfaction in performance appraisal. Four orthopedics departments were selected for a one-year trial, with the results evaluated in the end. Results A comparison made before and after this appraisal found an increase of the nurses′ job satisfaction (9 out of 13 survey items, P <0.05), higher inpatient satisfaction (P<0.05), and higher nursing quality ( number of adverse nursing events Ⅳ, P <0.05). Other indicators include more nurses participate in learning and theoretical researches ( number of papers published, number of lecture hosts and the number of participants in nursing competition ( P <0.05 ). Conclusions The performance appraisal system of orthopedic nurses can improve nursing quality and patient satisfaction, effectively mobilize the initiative and creativity of nurses, and meet the characteristics of nurse post management, proving a success in use.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The present study was conducted to determine the influence of social support on the relationship between emotional labor and nursing performance of general hospital nurses. METHODS: Data collection was conducted at three general hospitals in Jeollabuk-do from August 10 to 25, 2017. Collected questionnaires (188 nurses) were analyzed based on percentages, means, SD, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffé, Pearson correlation analysis, and moderated regression analysis using SPSS Statistics 24.0 software. RESULTS: Social support was found to moderate the influence of nurses' emotional labor on nursing performance. That is, high level of social support can reduce the negative effect of emotional labor on nursing performance. CONCLUSION: Based on findings in the present study, it can be said that establishing positive organizational culture through harmonious social support at the work site is necessary to improve nursing performance. In addition, measures to effectively improve social support need to be explored and practiced at the work site. Efforts should be made to come up with strategies to properly cope with and overcome emotional labor. The results of this study suggest the scope for further research to identify additional variables that moderate or mediate the relationship between emotional labor and nursing performance.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the effects of emotional intelligence and working environment on nursing performance of nurses caring for cancer patients in small and medium hospitals were mediated by communication competence.METHODS: The data was collected between Aug. 1 and Aug. 30, 2018 from 240 nurses caring for cancer patients from 11 small and medium hospitals in B city. Variables included in this study were the Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale (WLEIS), the Practice Environment Scale of Nursing Work Index (PES-NWI), the Global Interpersonal Communication Competence (GICC), and nursing performance. The collected data were analyzed by t-tests, ANOVA and Scheffe's test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and 3 step multiple regression using SPSS/WIN 24.0 and the Sobel test.RESULTS: Communication competence, in the relationship between emotional intelligence and nursing working environment on nursing performance in nurses caring for cancer patients in small and medium hospitals, showed a partial mediating effect (Z=5.24, p < .001; Z=2.44, p=.001 respectively).CONCLUSION: The results of this study showed the effects of emotional intelligence and nursing working environment on nursing performance of nurses caring for cancer patients in small and medium hospitals were mediated by communication competence.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: This study was aimed to examine relationships among workplace bullying, organization culture and nursing performance in clinical nurses.METHODS: A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted from October 16 to 26, 2018 with 168 nurses participating in RN-BSN and graduate programs in a university. Data was analyzed with SPSS 22.0 by t - test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient and hierarchical multiple regression.RESULTS: Of nurses, 23.2% were found as victims of workplace bullying. Higher scores for workplace bullying positively correlated with rank-oriented culture (r=.19, p=.015), negatively correlated with relational-oriented culture (r=−.43, p<.001) and innovation-oriented culture (r=−.35, p<.001). After adjusting for other variables, better nursing performance was associated with lower scores for workplace bullying (β=−.18, p=.026) and innovation-oriented culture (β=.24, p=.023). However, there was no moderating effect of organizational culture in the relationship between workplace bullying and nursing performance.CONCLUSION: Efforts to creating innovative organizational culture and reducing workplace bullying can contribute to improving nursing performance.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationships and the levels of emotional Intelligence, ego-resilience and nursing performance and to investigate the mediating effects of ego-resilience in the relationship emotional Intelligence with nursing performance among clinical nurses.METHODS: The study design was a cross-sectional survey. The study participants were a total of 142 clinical nurses who were registered in three general hospitals. The data were analyzed by frequency, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analysis using SPSS 21.0 software and Sobel's test was conducted to evaluate availability of the mediating effects of ego-resilience.RESULTS: The study results had shown that there were significant co-relationships of the emotional Intelligence, ego-resilience and nursing performance and the mediating effects of ego-resilience in the relationship emotional Intelligence with nursing performance.CONCLUSION: Emotional intelligence in enhancing nursing performance, was an element to enhance hospital performance by managing self-emotion in relationships of patients and clinical staffs. In addition, ego-resilience as a mediating variable in the relationship emotional Intelligence with nursing performance, should be considered to develop each nursing department programs and strategy for improving nursing performance through enhancing emotional intelligence.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to examine the relationships among hospice-palliative care (HPC) nurses' knowledge of delirium, self-efficacy and nursing performance. METHODS: This study was participated by 174 nurses working in the HPC unit. The nurses were asked to fill out a questionnaire that was structured to measure their knowledge of delirium, a self-efficacy in clinical performance scale (SECPS) and nursing performance. RESULTS: The mean score for knowledge was 32.83 out of 45, with correction rate of 73%. The mean score for self-efficacy was 7.08 out of 10. The mean score of nursing performance was 2.95 out of 4. Significant correlation was observed among the variables of knowledge (r=0.28, P < 0.001), self-efficacy (r=0.51, P < 0.001) and nursing performance. CONCLUSION: Nurses with high level of knowledge of delirium showed high level of self-efficacy, and consequently better HPC nursing performance. It is necessary to develop a training program on delirium considering nurses' needs of knowledge of the condition. The effectiveness of the training program should be also examined in future.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Focusing manner is very powerful mind-body self-help and self-awareness competence. So focusing manner may affect nurses' emotional labor and nursing performance, but few are known about it to date. The purpose of this study was to identify the degree of focusing manner, emotional labor, nursing performance of clinical nurses, and the factors that affect nursing performance. METHODS: In order to collect data, structured questionnaires were administered to 212 nurses who worked at 2 university hospitals located in D city. Data were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, correlation and multiple regression using SPSS/WIN 20.0. RESULTS: Nursing performance had positive relationship with focusing manner (r=.45, p<.001), and negative relationship with emotional labor (r=−.25, p<.001). And the most prediction factor influencing nursing performance was focusing manner (β=.41, p<.001) and the other factors were age (β=.30, p=.002), and emotional labor (β=.14, p=.012). The total variance was 37.1% by those predictors (F=25.87, p<.001). CONCLUSION: Based on the results of this study, it is necessary to develop and educational program on focusing manner-oriented psychotherapy in order to improve the nursing performance. Also, the management system for controlling emotional labor needs to be set up for nurses in clinical settings.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify effects of moving from a functional method of nursing care delivery to a modified team nursing delivery system. METHODS: A structured self-report questionnaire was used to measure satisfaction with the nursing delivery system, self-efficacy, job stress and nursing performance. Participants were 72 nurses working at a university hospital and data were collected three times; before, one month and three months after the modification to a modified team nursing delivery system. Data were analyzed using repeated measure ANOVA. RESULTS: Satisfaction with the nursing delivery system increased significantly after the change to the modified team nursing method. There were no significant differences in self-efficacy, job stress, or nursing performance. However, satisfaction with the nursing delivery system and nursing performance increased and job stress decreased significantly in new nurses with less than 1 year experience. CONCLUSION: Results indicate that a modified team nursing method has positive results on nurses' satisfaction, self-efficacy, job stress, and nursing performance compared to the functional method. Effect of changing the nursing delivery system in the hospital suggests possibilities and directions for a modified nursing delivery system that would be useful in hospitals presently using the functional method.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study was done to identify and compare nursing performance including job stress, emotional labor and burnout between nurses who work in comprehensive nursing care service wards and general wards. METHODS: Participants were 187 nurses working in a general hospital in Busan which provides comprehensive nursing care service (comprehensive nursing care service ward: 95, general ward: 92). Data were collected using questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics, χ² test, t-test, ANOVA, and multiple regression with the SPSS/WIN 23.0 program. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in the variables between comprehensive nursing care service ward nurses and general ward nurses. Factors influencing burnout were emotional labor in comprehensive nursing care service ward nurses while job stress and emotional labor were the factors influencing burnout in general ward nurses. CONCLUSION: The findings of this study indicate that comprehensive nursing care service can be a positive delivery system for nurses. Therefore, there is a need for strategies to integrate comprehensive nursing care service systematically.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study was done to identify the relationships of perception of JCI (Joint Commission International) hospital accreditation, nursing performance, self-concept and retention intention in nurses. METHODS: Self-administered questionnaires were used to collect data from 199 JCI-accredited nurses in general hospitals located in Gyeonggi Province. Data collection was done in May 2015 and analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Scheffé's test, and Pearson correlation coefficients. RESULTS: The scores for perception, and nursing performance were (on a five-point Likert scale) 3.34, 3.78 respectively, and self-concept and retention intention were (on a eight-point Likert scale) 5.40 and 5.21 respectively. Nurses' perception, nursing performance, self-concept, and retention intention showed significant differences depending on age, marital status, education, department, work experience, position, Korean accreditation, and JCI accreditation. A positive correlation was observed between perception, nursing performance, self-concept, and retention intention. CONCLUSION: The results of this study indicate that enhancing positive perception and good nursing performance can produce good self-concept and retention intention.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to elucidate nursing performance to superior's ethical leadership as perceived by nurses and the mediating effect of faith in supervisor. METHODS: For this study a descriptive survey design was used. Participants were 258 nurses who worked in general hospital and completed the self-report questionnaire. Data were collected from May 17 to May 31, 2017 and were analyzed using independent t-test, ANOVA, Scheffé test, and Path analysis with SPSS 22.0 and AMOS 21.0. RESULTS: Superior's ethical leadership as perceived by the nurses and faith in the supervisor were significant variables predicting the level of nursing performance and accounted for 48.1% of the variance. Faith in the supervisor as a mediator was found to have a partial mediating effect. CONCLUSION: In order to improve the nurses' performance, it is important to establish a work environment so that hospital nurses can perform their work with faith in their supervisors, as well as having superiors who are ethical leaders.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to develop a tool to evaluate the nursing competency of ambulatory nurses and to verify the reliability and validity of the developed tool for use in general hospitals. METHODS: The evaluation tool for ambulatory nursing competency was developed through a literature review and tests for validity and reliability. RESULTS: Subsequent to a review of the literature on nursing performance of ambulatory nurses, a 12 item questionnaire was developed. Through factor analysis, 12 items in a 2 factor solution were derived. Cronbach's α coefficient of the final instrument was .86. CONCLUSION: The assessment tool developed in this study allows for objective assessments of nursing competencies in relation to the competencies expected of ambulatory care nurses. It is hoped that the assessment tool can be used for empirical verification and to provide basic data for establishing the necessary policies to secure outstanding human resources.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The local public hospitals in Korea are regarded as institutions that must consider the provision of good quality public health services, as well as profitability. Therefore it is important to improve nursing services to produce positive change in local public hospitals. This study was done to examine the relationships between self efficacy, organizational commitment, customer orientation and nursing performance for nurses in local public hospitals. METHODS: For this study, 5 of 34 institutions were selected through random sampling: and 134 nurses working in local public hospitals were selected. Data were collected from March 28 to April 8, 2016 using self-report questionnaires. Collected data were analyzed using independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffé test, Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression with SPSS/WIN 18.0. RESULTS: The major findings are summarized as follows: (1) There were significant positive correlations between self efficacy, organizational commitment, customer orientation, and nursing performance. (2) The factors affecting nursing performance were self efficacy, organizational commitment, and customer orientation, in that order, and these variables explained 57% of nursing performance. CONCLUSION: Administrators in local public hospitals should use the results of this study to develop a strategy for improving nursing performance.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify differences between the degree of nursing need and nursing performance as perceived by caregivers of hospitalized children. METHODS: Participants included 200 main caregivers from two pediatric hospitals where their children had been hospitalized for at least 2 days. Data were collected from October 30 to December 10, 2014. RESULTS: The degree (2.64+/-0.40) of nursing performance perceived by caregivers with hospitalized children was found to be significantly lower than that (3.39+/-0.21) of nursing needs of caregivers. Of nursing needs, direct nursing had the highest score at 3.59, and nursing assessment, the lowest at 3.23. For nursing performance, nursing assessment had the highest score at 2.76, and education and counseling, the lowest at 2.35. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that performance of nursing activities by nurses caring for hospitalized children do not meet the nursing needs of the caregivers. Therefore it is necessary to develop nursing strategies to reduce the gap between nursing needs and nursing performance.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to ascertain current status of nurses' perception, nursing performance, job stress, and burnout in relation to the Joint Commission International (JCI) hospital accreditation and to verify the relationships among these variables. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was performed using questionnaires. Data were collected from 220 nurses who worked at one hospital from April 5 to May 4, 2013. RESULTS: The scores for perception, nursing performance, job stress and burnout in relation to the JCI hospital accreditation were(on a five-point Likert scale) 3.23, 4.01, 3.56 and 3.40 respectively. A positive correlation was observed between perception and nursing performance. Burnout was negatively correlated with perception and nursing performance, and positively correlated with job stress. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that developing positive perception and reduced burnout in relation to the JCI hospital accreditation can produce good nursing performance. These findings can be utilized to develop strategies for reducing job stress and burnout in relation to the JCI hospital accreditation.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore scientific and effective evaluation methods of hospital nursing performance.Methods Using balanced score card (BSC),Delphi method and key performance indicator (KPI) to build a system of nursing performance indicators; using entropy weight method to determine the weight coefficients of nursing performance indicators; using RSR method to compare the nursing effects of wards before and after the nursing performance management.Results 4 first-level nursing performance indicators,9 secondary-level ones and 27 tertiary-level ones were obtained,and the weight coefficient of every index was computed; According to terrible,poor,moderate,good,excellent levels,25 wards were ranked after implementing nursing performance management.There was significant difference of the overall performance management effects of 25 wards after implementing performance evaluation,comparing with the case before.Conclusions To combine entropy weight method and Rank-sum ratio (RSR) method is pertinent,scientific and reasonable,and the results can be taken as the evidence for nursing performance evaluation.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: In this study, we examined the differences and relationship between teaching style of preceptors, and personality, nursing performance, and organizational socialization of new nurses. METHODS: The participants were 118 new nurses. The data collected from March to May 2011 were analyzed using descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficients. RESULTS: Teaching style of preceptors was most frequently judgement-initiative, and personality of new nurses was most frequently extraversion. Nursing performance (3.05+/-.59) and organizational socialization (3.05+/-.59) of new nurses were at an average level. Nursing performance and organizational socialization of new nurses were not significantly different according to teaching style of preceptors. Significant correlations were found between personality and nursing performance, and between personality and organizational socialization. CONCLUSION: These findings indicate that changes in perceived teaching style of preceptors and personality of new nurses may be necessary to increase efficiency of preceptorship related to nursing performance and organizational socialization of new nurses. The above-mentioned results should be reflected in the development of effective preceptor training programs.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to identify the influence of job stress and empowerment on nursing performance of clinical nurses working in small and medium hospital. METHODS: The empirical data were collected from a self-administered survey using a structured questionnaire with 404 nurses working in 4 medium-sized hospitals (less than 300 beds), located in I-city. The data were analyzed using stepwise multiple regression with the SPSS/WIN 17.0 program. RESULTS: There were significant differences in nursing performance depending on general characteristics (age, marital status, religion, shift work, education level, position, clinical experience, department, and monthly salary). Empowerment correlated with nursing performance. Factors influencing on nursing performance were empowerment, clinical experience, job stress, and marital status with R2 value of 36.3%. The most influencing factor was empowerment (beta=.47), followed by clinical experience (beta=.24), job stress (beta=.20), and marriage (beta=.12). CONCLUSION: It is needed to implement specific empowerment strategy, control job stress, and reward experienced and married nurses working in medium-sized hospital for improving nursing task performance.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of empowerment on nursing performance, job satisfaction, organizational commitment and turnover intention in hospital nurses. METHODS: The subjects were 345 nurses at a general hospital in D city. Data were collected by structured questionnaire from January 10 to February 15, 2009. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, ANOVA, Scheffe's test, and Pearson correlation coefficient, multiple regression by SPSS win 17.0 program. RESULTS: The mean scores were 3.60(+/-.43) of empowerment, 3.80(+/-.38) of nursing performance, 3.49(+/-.55) of job satisfaction, 4.70(+/-.74) of organizational commitment, and 2.34(+/-.84) of turnover intention. Empowerment was correlated with nursing performance, job satisfaction, and organizational commitment positively, but correlated with turnover intention negatively. As a result of multiple regression, empowerment has 34.3% of the explanatory power on nursing performance, 24.0% on job satisfaction, 30.7% on organizational commitment, and 15.6% on turnover intention. CONCLUSION: Empowerment was a critical variable affecting nursing job performance, job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and turnover. Also, if various variable - active and adequate child-care support system, provided conditions continue to study, and adequate and appropriate compensation for nursing performance - affecting empowerment are managed, nurses' empowerment level will rise at the same time.
